Wow, what an incredible read. A collection of short stories written by black British authors, on what it is like to be a black man in Britain. The stories range from childhood broken homes, prejudice in the workplace, unique-sounding names dictating job opportunities, and more. Really is a book i’d recommend anyone to ready. Melinda Gates in her book X talks about how discrimination or prejudice is simply devastating for any society - in todays world, I think books such as this should be shared more widely.
- Basic aspect of human nature is to want to believe you have control over your future, to define themselves
- When you come from a place where everyone is on benefits, minimum wage, all the house are poor - the only way to differentiate is to show off with clothes, brand names.
- The image of black people is controlled by the media, and passed down over generations
- If you develop your sense of potential from the media, your options are narrow.
- Failures and successes, none of them are born as such - they’re made by their family, environment, society and themselves. They’re made by escaping the cycle, of falling prey to it.
